UCubed
the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers has launched Ur Union of Unemployed. This virtual union aims to unify the jobless in unique & useful ways.
It is live at http://www.unionofunemployed.com.
Ur Union of Unemployed -- or UCubed as we've nicknamed it -- connects the unemployed into cubes of six people to end that sense of being all alone in this Grave Recession. It organizes those cubes into neighborhoods and then blocks – power blocks politicians cannot ignore, purchasing blocks merchants cannot avoid.
But most important, UCubed offers the unemployed a way to use their skills and talents to help others through these hard times even as they help themselves.
Enter your zip code in the Build-A-Community bar at www.unionofunemployed.
Since UCubed is open to everyone harmed by this economic turmoil, check out www.unionofunemployed.com soon.
Let's work together to end this Grave Recession.
In unity -- strength!

Jobs and the Class of 2009 - On Point with Tom Ashbrook
The college class of 2009 is fit, bright, eager and up against one of the worst job markets in all of American history.
http://www.onpointradio.org/2009/10/jobs-and-the-class-of-09-2
Nearly six months after graduation - after the cheering and tossed caps and family hugs - waves of 2009ers still have no job. Or nothing like the jobs they hoped for.
They're pounding the pavement, the keyboard, the online job sites. Running low on graduation cash. Waiting tables. Staring at their college loans. Wondering "what now?"
This hour, On Point: We'll talk with grads from the class of 2009 about their dreams and trial by fire in a down job market.
Comment from a 2009 Graduate Intern on WBUR OnPoint staff:
"The Class of 2009 is hearty. We don't get fazed by much anymore. September 11 was our first week of high school. Hurricane Katrina our first week of college. Our political consciousness was shaped by the Bush presidency and officially awoken by the candidacy and election of Barack Obama. And I think we'll definitely reach a point where we're no longer 'lost' but leading everyone out of the woods."
I occasionally listen to this show on the WPR-FM radio. Their web-site is: http://www.onpointradio.org/ and seems quite cool. Among other things, they use the site to get comments (check on the 82 in response to this discussion) and questions.
As I listened to this series of interviews of the guests and callers, I was struck by how similar the stories and issues are for ALL of us. I did find myself talking back to the radio a few times, including yelling at the caller who advertised a position on Craigslist, got hundreds of applicants, and hired the office manager based on the facts that she had no children, seem willing to take orders, and knew how to use Craigslist! What an interview that must have been.
Bob PS - I hope the links to the npr.org and bur.org sites work.

Any UW-Madison alumni out there?
Online jobs tool launches this week - August 18, 2009
A new online jobs tool connecting highly skilled UW-Madison alumni with employers seeking candidates with specific expertise is fully operational, after a successful test launch from March through May. The Badger Career Network Alerts program will use targeted e-mails to connect graduates in mid-career and executive-level jobs anywhere in the nation with Wisconsin companies seeking new management, scientific and professional talent in biotechnology, health care and information technology.
WAA officials saw the new tool as both a boon for employers and a natural extension of its services for graduates. "Especially in these difficult economic times, we're more aware than ever that Badgers are looking for the valuable career resources that WAA offers," said Gina Evans, WAA's career and corporate relations specialist. "It's free to join and participate, and it's a great way for alumni to maximize their connections to their alma mater and advance their careers."
The service is now available to Wisconsin employers and soon will be available to companies around the country, WAA said. It was developed with Thrive, an economic-development agency for the eight-county Madison region. Alumni can find Badger Career Network at uwalumni.com/careers. Interested employers should contact Gina Evans at 608-263-4507 or gevans@waastaff.com
