Hess Cooperage Historical Marker A committee has been working with the Dane County Historical Society on the text and placement of a two-sided historical marker at Schenk's Corners to commemorate the Hess Cooperage that made wooden beer barrels there from 1904 through 1966. If you haven't heard HBGHS board member and volunteer Gary Hess's excellent power point program on his grandfather's barrel making business, call him to find out when and where the next presentation will take place (608 222-9656).

Beyond the Velvet Ropes & Marketing on a Shoestring The Dean House should be thought of as a "historic site" not just a "house museum". This will allow for more creative thinking about ways to attract visitors and recruit members. Bob Bean, Judith Bodden and Ann Waidelich attended a two day workshop in Wausau sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation that had this clever title. They brought back a notebook full of ideas for enhancing the organization. Want to help HBGHS become better known? Call Ann Waidelich (249-7920) for information on a workshop to be held at Olbrich Gardens on Monday May 19th, 9:30 am - 3 pm . Local experts will give advice on how to maximize media coverage. Cost $45, with lunch and guided tour of Olbrich Gardens included. |
