Tonyawatha's Healing Waters

This past Spring two graduate students, Beckett Horowitz and Chris Hommerding, taking a Methods Seminar in the UW's Center for Culture, History and Environment program, interviewed Dick Lichtfeld and Bob Bean about the Tonyawatha spring. They went together to the site of the spring where Dick opened the cover and showed them the bubbling water. They created a short DVD which is posted on the internet at http://envhist.wisc.edu/cool_stuff/health/stories.shtml

The students have also given the HBGHS extra video footage that they shot that wasn't used in the DVD. We thank them for being interested in the site and sharing the results of their project with us.

Greetings from our President

By Gloria Simley

I cannot believe it is October already. I hope you all have had a glorious summer, although there were some awfully hot days. So hot, we even had to cancel one of our Back Porch Concerts. On the subject of the concerts, we once again had a very successful season. The music was great, the performers were happy, and the audience was most appreciative. The Ice Cream Social was a huge success. A very big Thank You to our volunteers and to all of you who so generously gave when the Hat was passed.

We are looking forward to our Birthday Party for Mrs. Harriet Dean on November 13th. Please look for the details in this newsletter. It will be a very special event—plan on being there to honor her.

If you have driven past the Dean House, have you noticed how beautiful it looks? The gardens in front of the porch are quite visible from Monona Drive. Of course, they didn’t just appear—a lot of work by volunteers went into making the Dean House even more awesome. We are in the process of completing the side gardens also. Let us know how you like the new look.

Have a lovely fall season, come and visit us the Second Sunday of the month, and how about letting us know if and when you can become a volunteer and/or be available to be on the Board of Directors.

PastPerfect MultiMedia Upgrade

HBGHS received a matching grant of $150 from the Wisconsin Historical Society & the Wisconsin Council for Local History to purchase the MultiMedia Upgrade to our PastPerfect software. This will allow us to add photographs or scans to the catalog records we are creating for all the objects, books, photographs and archives in our collection. Anyone with a digital camera and some time is encouraged to volunteer to photograph objects so that they can be added to the records.
