Thumbnail 1 of new MGHS Doug Wait from Cullen led the tour.
Thumbnail 2 of new MGHSThe group started in the hallway of the gym/pool area.
Thumbnail 3 of new MGHSWait explained that there is an air control system that will keep the pool area from being too humid or smelling like chlorine.
Thumbnail 4 of new MGHSThe Silver Eagle painted on the wall of the gym is very striking and no doubt will become a trademark of the new school.
Thumbnail 5 of new MGHSThe gym is big enough to hold two full-court basketball games at once and features an injury-preventing soft floor.
Thumbnail 6 of new MGHSIt's not the size of the new pool that impresses, but the amenities
Thumbnail 7 of new MGHSThe new pool has an always-full feature. When more people are in the pool, the excess water is stored in a special tank and fills back into the pool when people get out.
Thumbnail 8 of new MGHSThe water fills right up to the top of the pool.
Thumbnail 9 of new MGHSUndoubtedly many meets will be slated for this excellent facility, which will also be open to the public in non-school hours.
Thumbnail 10 of new MGHSThe boys and girls locker rooms are virtually identical. This is the boys
Thumbnail 11 of new MGHSThe small lockers around the outside are for full-time storage, and there are larger lockers inside to hold street clothes while a student is in the gym or pool.
Thumbnail 12 of new MGHSThis area will be "technical education," which we used to call "shop". Hoods will remove dust and paint.
Thumbnail 13 of new MGHSEvery classroom features white-boards and a TV monitor rack which is already pre-wired for school-wide cable.
Thumbnail 14 of new MGHSHallways are being finished from the top down and a color-coded.
Thumbnail 15 of new MGHSThe tour group included school board member and officials from the contracting firm.
Thumbnail 16 of new MGHSEvery classroom is carpeted and well-lit.
Thumbnail 17 of new MGHSThe sophisticated heating system can cool one side of the building while heating the other on days with a great deal of solar heating.
Thumbnail 18 of new MGHSComputer labs are built into the school, but the number and type of computers they will contain is still up for discussion.
Thumbnail 19 of new MGHSHallways are both wider and taller than in the "old school."
Thumbnail 20 of new MGHSThe school district had just recently purchased laboratory hoods for safe science labs, and these are incorporated into the new building.
Thumbnail 21 of new MGHSScience labs are well equipped.
Thumbnail 22 of new MGHSThe new school used one entire semi-load of epoxy countertops for science labs.
Thumbnail 23 of new MGHSBoard member Bill Thomas checks out one of the labs.
Thumbnail 24 of new MGHSAnother view of one of the larger science labs.
Thumbnail 25 of new MGHSThe center area of the building features some larger rooms that can be used for science demonstrations, and contain retractable projection screens.
Thumbnail 26 of new MGHSWait demonstrates the screens
Thumbnail 27 of new MGHSHigh density storage units for science lab materials were moved from the old school because they used up-to-date technology.
Thumbnail 28 of new MGHSThe modern bathrooms are clean and easily cleanable.
Thumbnail 29 of new MGHSMany of the classrooms have shelf space for storage and built-in computer desks. (That's what I was shooting here...not the backs of people's heads!)
Thumbnail 30 of new MGHSWait said the new auditorium/cafeteria wing should be ready before the year 2000, over Christmas vacation, 1999.
Photography note:
Because I have worked as a photographer, I have to make some excuses for these pictures. They were taken with a Sony Mavica (digital) camera and are to be considered strictly snapshots. Several of the shots are not very good photographically, but are included anyway because they show some interesting aspect of the new school.
Thanks to Terri Groves and the Monona Chamber of Commerce who sponsored the tour.
